WHAT IS A WARM WATER SYSTEM?
Commonly confused with a ‘heated water system’ found in most buildings, a warm water system distributes water to outlets such as showers, basins and baths for personal hygiene purposes. Warm water systems are commonly used in hospitals, health care buildings and aged care facilities and deliver water around 45 degrees Celsius. The lowering of the temperature is excellent at preventing scalding of patients and residents, however, this introduces the potential risk of microbial growth.
One particular microorganism of concern is Legionella, which may multiply rapidly at these lower temperatures if the system is not designed, installed, managed and maintained appropriately. There is the potential to cause illness and death in residents, employees and visitors to the facility if effective risk mitigation strategies are not in place.
