WHAT IS A COOLING TOWER?
Water that has been heated in an air-conditioning condenser or from an industrial process is pumped through pipes to a cooling tower. The cooling tower is a specialised heat exchanger, which allows air and water to come into direct contact with each other.
The water is sprayed into the cooling tower through ‘nozzles’ and onto large amounts of material embedded within the cooling tower structure called ‘fill’. The fill helps to increase the surface area of the water and provide maximum air-water contact. Air is pulled through the cooling tower by a large fan and as the water and air meet, it allows for the cooling of the water and a small amount of water loss through evaporation. The cooled water is then returned to the condenser or process equipment and the cycle repeats.
Within the tower, ideal environments are created for the multiplication of microbial organisms such as Legionella. If this risk is not managed appropriately, there is the potential to cause illness and/or death in employees, contractors, customers or the general public who have visited within 6km of buildings that contain a cooling tower.
